Welcome to the Official Website of the Waco African Amercian Museum!
OUR PURPOSE AND DIRECTION
The African American Museum of History, Culture and the Arts (WAAM) will fill the Central Texas need for an organization dedicated to the African American experience that also looks to the future through varied art forms. As a 501 ( c ) 3 organization, the museum will support itself through membership, grant writing, fundraising activities and community events.
The presentations of the Museum, combined with its related activities, will serve to assist all people to understand the African American experience with emphasis on Waco and Central Texas.
The WAAM will enrich the lives of all visitors, especially children and youth, using education to empower them through experiences that will enlighten them culturally and intellectually. We are a gathering place for the community, a forum for broader community engagement and a partner for collaborations with historical and cultural institutions.
AFRICAN DIASPORA
The scattering of people from Africa and the sowing of their cultures globally.
ORIGINS
Our origins are in Africa two million years ago. As we move, adapt and transform, new origins take root and the cycle continues.
MOVEMENT
Individuals, families and communities move continuously, sometimes seeking fresh prospects, sometimes forced by slavery, war or famine. Always, our movements reinvent us, remixing the possibilities.
ADAPTATION
People and cultures evolve as the traditions and memories we carry with us creatively engage new surroundings and other cultures.
